What made you want to begin this after-school project?

We are 100% remote due to the Covid Pandemic. Our students love to work with clay and we won’t be doing that this year during regular school. We also have a brand new building with no public art. I thought that having a public art piece created in clay by students would help the school community by providing limited access to clay projects and begin to celebrate our art making skills with public art on our new campus.

What does an average day look like in your after-school project?

We are currently only gathering supplies and doing sign-up. I anticipate that we will meet in small groups in the art room to receive instruction with clay making and to have time to work creatively with clay for 1 hour per group of 5 students.

How do the students like the project so far?

My principals and the third grade teachers are very excited. I am posting the sign-up tomorrow via Sign-Up Genius App on the third grade Art Page and we will begin taking reservations for group spots. 800 lbs. of clay was delivered last week- Glaze will be ordered in early January and I will build the posts over winter break-!

Anything else you would like to add about how your project is going?

Everything seems to be going well and I am looking forward to seeing students working in clay again. The janitor has been supportive, I have received support and suggestions from the community and we are moving forward!
